Dear Students, As of Monday 3 November, I will be on Study Leave and I will not be able to be contacted via email, so for the remainder of this semester please contact Andrew Simpson on for any queries about this unit. For any issues relating to extensions or grades, then he is the person to deal with this. Any emails that I have received up to today will either be passed on to Andrew or I will reply, but from here on, please email Andrew directly. I would like to thank Andrew for helping out with the co-ordination of the unit for these last few weeks. Finally, I would like to wish you well in your last assignment and look forward to teaching many of you in the coming years. Those of you for whom this is your final unit, we hope that it has provided you with a practical basis for teaching literacy, and in particular, reading. Our teaching team has worked hard over the past semester to make this unit interesting and a positive learning experience for you. We know that we can improve the learning design for next year and have already begun to do this, but your constructive evaluations will help us to identify additional areas that need changing. External students should have received an email by now asking you to complete an evaluation online and Internals have already completed this during our final lecture on Thursday of this week. Dear Students,
A number of you have been seeking clarification about the final submission of
Assignment 2.
Please note the following points:
1. Word limit = 2500 - 3500 Maximum (Do not go over the 3500). References are not
included in this limit.
2. You are allowed to tidy up your original submissions. You
can correct the spelling and grammar errors in your final collated
piece. However, you are not allowed to make changes to the content.
3. As for the headings, this is an essay format, and so, you should not
use dot points or headings. This means that you need to delete these
in the final version.
In the first example that we used, in the Hermit Crab, we did not use dot points or
headings, as this was set out like an essay. Sometimes in our model answers, we have
used headings and dot points, but this was because we were trying to point out the
ideas and emphasise what were the strengths and weaknesses for you. In your initial
6 submissions and postings, if you have put headings, this does not matter, BUT in
the final version, we want you to delete these.
4. You need to put this together as an essay; a brief introduction; a
body (with the 6 text descriptions) and a section which compares and
contrasts these readings as a short conclusion. The comparison and contrast section
can be the conclusion or you can add a short conclusion at the end of this section.
5. Don't forget you need to have a Reference List at the end and are expected to
include in-text references from Hill, and the e-reserve readings, to back up the
points you make.

Dear Students, A number of you have been concerned about the different percentages which relate to Easy, Instructional and Hard texs. In Clay's text An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement, 1993:23, she states: an easy text is 95% -100%; an instructional text is 90% to 94% and a hard text is 80% to 89%. In the EDUC 193/293 Workbook on page 10, we put easy as 96% and above; instructional as 90% - 95% and Hard as 85% to 89%. These percentages came from Max Kemp's work. As you can see above, different authors use slightly different percentages. What is most important for you to remember is that when analysing a piece of text you need to consider ALL aspects of the reading. While the percentage tells you one thing, it can sometimes be inaccurate and you may need to look at the sources of information such as syntax to get an accurate picture. In the attached file, of Michael reading the Dandelion, you can see that although this comes out as a Hard text, if ignore the changes he makes to the tense, then this reading is not a hard text. For the purpose of Assignments 2 and 3, you should use the percentages that are in Clay to avoid confusion. Regards Di

Dear Students, The lecture presented by Madeline Fussell on Tuesday 26 August, entitled Modelled, Guided and Independent Reading is now available in Unit Materials in both Broadband and Dial-up sizes. There is also a pdf version of the powerpoints. At this point in time, I do not have a separate audio file. I have also put up a pdf of Lecture 5 (Week 6) presented on Tuesday 2 September by Madeline entitled Strategies for Emergent Readers. I know that many of you are keen to get information about strategies to use in Assignment 2 & 3, so this one is an excellent resource for that. The Quicktime Movies should be finalised by Monday. Dear Students, It is important, when undertaking collaborative tasks, that you understand your responsibilities for supporting and contributing to your group. Therefore, from here on, you must adhere to the following procedure and complete the required tasks by the due day, for Assignment 2. 1. e-submit your 300 - 500 word analysis by the Friday due date. 2. By the following Monday AM - Post your analysis into your Blog Wow. 3. By the following Wednesday - Comment on your group's Blog Wows. 4. On the Thursday, a model for the previous reading (from the teaching team) will be posted into your class group's wiki page - Discussions with your lecturer. Once this is done, it will be too late for you to make comments. Marks will be deducted if you do not follow this procedure. I know that you will appreciate the importance of timely contributions to ensure that your learning and your group's learning is worthwhile. All the best. Di

Dear All,
Some students seem to be worried that they may have failed the online test and therefore, failed the unit. This has prompted some students to consider withdrawing from the unit. Please note that if you have had a problem with the online test, don't hesitate to contact us (lecturers' contact details can be found in the Syllabus link on the EDUC193/293 site) and we will help sort out the issues you have experienced. We want to make sure that no student has been disadvantaged by problems they have encountered that are beyond their control.
Also note that extensions cannot be granted for the second assignment as students will be posting their analysis of the reading Jake Kicks a Goal on their blogs from tomorrow. This means that if some students had an extension, they would be able to view the work of other students before submitting their own work. This is obviously inequitable and not fair for all students. However it is important to note that the lecturers will be lenient when marking this first submission.
Please do not hesitate to contact your lecturer if you have any problems that are causing you concern

Dear Students, A number of you have been finding it difficult to keep to the 300 words when analysing the reading. Others have pointed out that the model we have given you of the Hermit Crab is 440 words. In an email that I sent to you on 22 July, I said that you could write between 300 - 500 words (Maximum) for each of the 6 readings. I also said that the final submission should be between 2500 - 3500 words. While you could write 500 words easily for each reading that would amount to 3000 before you have written an introduction and a summary/conclusion that compares and contrasts all the readings. This will limit your ability to be able to add to what you have written over the 6 weeks. My advice is that you should try to keep to the lower word count but we will not penalise you if you write 500 words. However, for the final submission we will be expecting you to keep below the 3500 word limit! Just remember that it will be the drawing together that will show us how your knowledge has grown over the 6 weeks. Regards Di

Dear Students, Please note that your Gradebook mark initially is out of 70% or the overall mark. This is because there were 3 Short Answer questions that have yet to be finalised. As the lecturers complete their marking of these questions, they will enter your marks and this will then update the mark in gradebook. Please be patient as markers will get these done as soon as possible. They should all be marked by 8 September. Regards Di

Dear Students, If you are a student who completed some of the questions and were unable to complete the full test, but received a mark, then it may be best for me to email just the questions that you were unable to complete. If this is your situation then I will contact you tomorrow via email and send you the questions once I can see which ones you need to do. If you are a student who tried to sit the test but the results show that you have not submitted the test, then you should undertake the new EDUC 193/293 Online Test 1.1. This test will become available Thursday 28 August at 9am until 11:55pm. Remember, once you begin the assessment, you will have one hour to complete this test. This time, I have set the test so that you cannot go back to previous questions, as this was a problem for some of you. I will also have to physically enter your marks into Gradebook and so you will have to be patient for this to be completed. Your Short Answer questions (3 x 10 points) will be marked over the next week and your marks will be adjusted once this is completed. We anticipate that this will be done by 8 September. If you have any questions please email me tomorrow. There are a few emails regarding the test that I have not been able to answer today, so please be patient and I will contact you as soon as possible. Dear Students, Approximately 40 students had some difficulty with the test. Most of these seemed to occur on Monday where some students were cut off before being able to complete the full test questions. If you are a student who has emailed me, then you will be able to re-sit the test beginning tomorrow. I had originally planned to release this today but need to confirm a few items and to check a few settings with the IT people so that we don't have a repeat of what has happened. I will send out an email later today to confirm the time that students will be able to access this. Regards Di

Dear Students, Your teaching team have now put up The Hermit Crab Model Answer in the Wiki. You will find it in your Class Group in the link to the Discussion with your lecturer. You will notice that we have addressed Michael's strengths, weaknesses and made some suggestions as to what we would do now for this child to further his reading. We have also put in two references for this example. For this first reading, we will not mark you down for not including referencing but for the next book, The Greedy Dog and the Bone and following books, we expect that you will demonstrate your knowledge of the set text Hill (2006) and appropriate readings in eReserve. For the final compiled submission of Assignment 2, you will need to set this out in an essay style and include a short introduction, a short summary section that compares and contrasts all the readings, and, as with any essay, you will need a Reference List at the end for the in-text references that you include. I will upload a marking criteria sheet for Assignment 2 and a checklist for you to use when analysing future readings. I will also upload a marking criteria sheet for Assignment 3.
